Farming

Rooted in Respect for the Land

Site-Driven Farming

At Paul Hobbs Winery, every wine begins in the vineyard. Our farming philosophy is guided by a deep respect for nature and an unwavering commitment to expressing the unique character of each site. By working thoughtfully with the land, we cultivate vines that reflect their origins with purity and authenticity.

Each of our estate and grower-partner vineyards is farmed with meticulous care, tailored to its individual soils, climate, and topography. We practice sustainable and regenerative techniques that prioritize soil health, biodiversity, and long-term vitality. As a California Certified Sustainable winery, we hold ourselves accountable to rigorous standards of environmental stewardship, ensuring our vineyards thrive while protecting the resources that sustain them.

We believe great farming requires an intimate connection with the vineyard, one that can only be achieved through presence and patience. Our team walks the rows daily throughout the growing season, observing the nuances of each vine and responding to the natural rhythms of the vintage. From canopy management and cluster thinning to soil health and water conservation, every decision is guided by the singular goal of helping the vines achieve balance.

By intentionally limiting yields, we allow the vines to channel their energy into concentrated, expressive fruit. When harvest arrives, each cluster is hand-picked at peak ripeness to preserve its integrity and character. This attentive, labor-intensive approach ensures that the fruit carries the full expression of its site—laying the foundation for wines of remarkable depth, finesse, and elegance.

Our process continuously evolves with our vineyards, allowing us to refine how we preserve and elevate each distinct site.

We employ dry farming or deficit irrigation to encourage deep root growth and conserve water.

Our vineyards are managed with no till or selective under-vine tilling to preserve soil structure and reduce erosion.

We practice soil spading for regeneration, improving aeration and supporting long-term soil health.

Cover crops are carefully managed to promote biodiversity, enhance soil fertility, and prevent erosion.

Farming is both a responsibility and a legacy—one that extends beyond a single vintage or season.

At Paul Hobbs Winery, we view each decision in the vineyard as an investment in the land, the community, and the generations to come. By nurturing our soils, advancing ecological vitality, and reducing our environmental footprint, we ensure that the vineyards remain vibrant and resilient well into the future.

Our commitment to sustainable farming practices reinforces this promise, holding us to the highest standards of environmental care and social responsibility. These efforts allow us to craft wines that are not only an authentic reflection of place today but also a testament to our dedication to preserving these treasured sites for tomorrow.
